Fruits & Assorted Nuts
In looking at the Global Market for Fruits and Nuts, we note that Spain is the largest Seller and Germany the largest buyer. For the U.S. Canada represents our largest (and one of the fastest growing export markets, at over $1.5 billion in 2004. Grapes and Bananas alone account for $500,000. Although U.S. accounts for over 50% of Canada’s imports of Fruits and Nuts, Chile, Mexico and Costa Rico are also important sources.
As can be expected, WUSATA boasts of 58% of Exports to Canada with California representing 80% of that figure. After loosing ground in 2001, California’s sales of Fruits and Nuts to Canada have been on the steady rebound.
We also need to give attention to smaller, but growing markets such as Turkey and Greece which are experiencing growth rates exceeding 70%. Ocean freight rates for refrigerated containers are around $8,000 to Turkey but only $4,000 to Greece. In addition, Import Tariff Rates for Greece are significantly lower as well.
